The honey gate is a simple thing that becomes important the moment you are pouring 30 kg of honey. Fitted at the lowest point of an extractor or bottling tank, it gives you a controllable stream rather than a tipped bucket.

Most are two-part: a body that screws through the tank wall and a lever or screw valve that opens and closes. The seal is the whole game — a gate that weeps wastes honey and makes everything sticky. Buy food-grade, buy a spare washer, and check the seal before every season.

Safety

Honey is heavy and a gate under pressure can open faster than expected. Have a container positioned before you open it, and never rely on the valve alone to hold a full tank while you move it.

Using it well

  • Fit the gate before you fill the tank, not after. Retrofitting means decanting.
  • Keep a spare washer taped to the tank so you always have one.
  • Warm the honey slightly to speed flow, but never above 40 °C — heat damages aroma.
  • After use, open the gate fully and rinse, or dried honey will glue it shut.
