Hive Tool

A flat bar with a hook — the single most-used object in beekeeping.

The hive tool is the beekeeper's hand. Bees glue everything together with propolis, and no amount of strength replaces a flat steel lever inserted at the right point. The standard J-hook tool pries boxes apart, lifts frames by the lug, and scrapes wax off surfaces.

Buy two, because one is always in the wrong box. The only real decision is the J-hook versus a straight paint-scraper style, and whether you want the extra leverage of a longer bar for separating deep boxes that have been sitting a season.

Safety

The hive tool is sharp and you will be levering hard. Keep your free hand out of the arc of the pry, and never use the tool to lever a frame while your fingers are under the lug.

Using it well

  • Bright paint or tape on the handle stops you losing it in the grass.
  • Keep the scraping edge sharp with a few strokes of a file — a blunt tool damages boxes.
  • A hive tool left in the hive gets propolised into the frames. Make a habit of pocketing it.
  • For stubborn deep boxes, insert the tool at a corner and work around, not at the middle of a wall.
