Hive Health & Inspection
Frame Grip
Lifts a frame by its lug so you never lever against comb.
A frame that has been in a hive for a season is glued in place. Pulling it by hand means levering against neighbouring comb, rolling bees and often tearing the frame out with a jerk. A frame grip hooks under the lug and lifts it cleanly and vertically.
It is a small, unglamorous tool that quietly prevents a great deal of damage. Crushed bees release alarm pheromone; a torn comb sets the colony back; a jerked frame can kill a queen you never saw.
The grip is used together with the hive tool, not instead of it: the hive tool frees the frame, the grip lifts it.
At a glance
Safety
Lift vertically. A frame tilted while still gripped can swing and tear comb from the bottom bar. Keep your other hand clear of the frame face while lifting — bees on the comb are at hand height.
Using it well
- Free the frame with a hive tool first, then grip. Trying to pull a stuck frame with the grip alone tears comb.
- Lift the first frame out and set it aside — it gives you room to work the rest without rolling bees.
- Hold the frame over the hive while you inspect so any bees that drop fall back in.
- Keep the grip clean. Propolis on the jaws reduces its bite.
