Hive Health & Inspection

Hive Scale

Weight is the honest number — it tells you what the hive will not.

A hive's weight is a running summary of everything happening inside it. A steady climb means nectar is coming in. A sudden drop of several kilograms in a day means a swarm has left. A slow decline through winter tells you exactly when stores are running out — weeks before the bees would show it at the entrance.

Scales come as single-hive platforms, usually with a load cell and a logger, or as permanent setups that report over a mobile network. The valuable part is not the absolute number but the trend: an overnight change of 2 kg is information no inspection can give you.

Safety

Lifting a loaded hive onto a scale platform is a two-person job and a back injury waiting to happen. Fit the scale under an empty hive at installation, or use a lever-and-block method rather than muscle.

Using it well

  • Fit the scale when the hive is empty. Retrofitting means lifting a full colony.
  • Record the weight at the same time each day so temperature effects are consistent.
  • A sudden 2–4 kg loss in swarm season is a swarm, not a robbing event — check for queen cells.
  • Track winter weight loss. When it accelerates, feed fondant immediately.
